The Rockhampton Bulletin of 30 June 1875 reported "The new system of telegraph money orders is now in operation and small sums may be sent by wire to any part of this colony or the colonies of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia.
In addition to the usual Post Office order fee, the sender has to pay for an official telegram and also requires himself to advise by wire the person to whom it is sent. This altogether makes the cost, in the case of small remittances beyond the colony, rather too heavy for ordinary purposes:
